Red Lady II |
The inlet at New Harbor, Maine, always has a number of fishing boats swinging at anchor. From Shaw's Lobster Wharf, my eye caught this boat forming a scarlet triangle with a fishing shack and house across the water, with complementary colors predominating in the background and the reflections. A World Below |
I captured this Escher-esque painting at a friend's garden pond. I was fascinated by the notion that there are five levels to this image: the lily pads are on the surface of the pond, the pebbles are on the bottom, the fish are in suspension between those, the sky is reflected in the water, and I am standing on dry ground. |

The Amish have a prohibition against having pictures made of their faces, citing the second of the Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” This cooperative but anonymous Amishman drives his horse and buggy up the lane toward a friend’s house in one of Ohio’s “Amish country” communities. |

Energico I |
I have begun a set of abstractions derived from the fluid forms I find in nature -- sky, water, and bio-scapes transformed into pure energy. When you take a portion of a cloud formation or moving water (which are similar gestures) and then swing the color wheel really hard, interesting things can happen. |

Energico II |
For me, Gesture is the most eloquent aspect of artistic expression in music or in painting. Inspired by my friend Terry Chamberlain's vision, my new "Energico" series is a set of free-painted reinterpretations of cloud patterns, water movement, and botanical forms -- divine gestures writ large and small across the face of creation. |

The Ohio Bicentennial Collection
March 1, 2003, marked the 200th anniversary of Ohio's entry into the union. but Ohioans have enjoyed watching the Bicentennial logo going up on barns across the state for the past several years.
As part of the celebration for Ohio's 200th birthday, the Ohio Bicentennial Commission engaged Scott Hagan to paint the Ohio Bicentennial logo on one barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Scott Hagan's barn-painting work was completed in September, 2002, but while it was going on, his painting sessions often became local media events, complete with politicians, vendors, and "groupies." Chuck Clevenger has done a set of twelve documentary watercolors featuring the best of Scott's Bicentennial barns. The paintings in this set are designed to show a representative sampling of Ohio's barn architecture and Scott Hagan's creative work, in a variety of weather conditions. Taken together, they provide a watercolor journal of Ohio's Bicentennial celebration.

High Tide | This scarred but serviceable rowboat lies just above the high tide line at Oakland House Seaside Resort, Maine. The tide rises and falls about 12 feet at this point on Eggemoggin Reach, and went out while I painted the scene; Little Deer Isle, which separates the Reach from the rest of Penobscot Bay, lies in the background. | 15x22" | Collection of John and Linda Mortensen |
Juliette | During a week in Paris, my wife and I spent some time with a delightful young couple. This painting of their little daughter was my gift to them for their hospitality. | 10x14” |
Collection de Frederic e Silvie Baconnier |
Derelict | A late November snow heightens the sense of desolation at this decaying old cottage near Coshocton, Ohio. | 11x15" | Collection of Jim & Cheryl Irish |
Autumn Stream | Multicolored leaves float down the Little Miami River in John Bryan State Park near Clifton, Ohio. Below the shallow, tannin-tinted water, submerged rocks and last year's decayed leaves are visible. | 11x15" | Collection of Mark and Vicky Herby |
The Pumpkin Patch | Commissioned by a friend as a Christmas gift for his wife, this is a character study of his two daughters. | 15x22" |
Collection of Greg & Patty Belliveau |
Snow Princess | My wife, Rhonda Clevenger, on a winter walk near our home. This was a value study using blue, orange, and the white of the paper. | 15x22" |

Keeping Vigil | Rhonda again, this time looking out the window on a sunny day. | 11x15" |
Collection of the Artist |
Pep Talk for Chilly | My daughter Courtenay with Chilly. The horse had been balky during the first round of showing; tearful and deeply embarassed, Courtenay took him "out back" for a stern talking-to. They came out and won the blue ribbon. I was proud of her achievement, but prouder still of the character she showed in going back out there to face the judges and the crowd. That's my girl. | 15x22" |

The Visionary | In the field and laser-focused on his subject, this is my father, the "real" Charles Clevenger -- philosopher, poet, and man of vision. He sees things that others miss. When he is in this mode, he is the embodiment of quiet intensity. | 22x30" |
Collection of the Artist |
Chasing the Light | My Dad again, this time at Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico. Surrounded by pink-tinted desert rocks and bathed in peach-colored light, he is squinting to deliberately reduce the scene to pure values, in order to judge whether it will make a good composition. I was amused by the idea of painting a highly-colored picture of someone who was trying so hard to see in black-and-white. | 22x30" |
Collection of the Artist |
Precious Baby | My oldest daughter with her new baby sister. Their bond of mutual love, though not genetic, is unbreakable. | 15x22" |
Collection of Rhonda H. Clevenger |
River of Time | My girls, then aged 11 and 7, at Massie Creek Falls just 1/4 mile from our home. Those were great years. But like the little river, time flows on. They are grown now. | 15x22" |
Collection of the Artist |
Inversions | Weekend warriors riding at anchor in West Dennis Marina on Cape Cod. To me, the abstract patterns of the reflections were more compelling images than the boats were. | 11x15" |
Collection of Steve & Candy Winteregg |
Mother | My incomparable Mom in her back yard, seated near her treasured pink poppies. | 15x18" |
Collection of the Artist |
Survivor | Mom again, after the hardest year of her life. She fought cancer and won, with the support of my Dad and a great team of doctors. Having achieved a serenity and spirituality that only comes when you have gone to the brink and returned, she is more beautiful now to me than ever. | 15x22" |
Collection of the Artist |
Young Family | My daughter Carla and her husband Joel hold their 1-month-old daughter, Ally Jo. As in many of my other compositions, the darks and lights intersect in a yin-yang pattern; for me, the interlocking here emphasizes their closeness and focuses your eye on Ally, the new love in my life. | 15x21" |
Collection of Joel & Carla Shank |
Young Man in Sunlight | A limited-palette character study in oranges and complementary blues. The subject is my son-in-law, Joel, standing near a large terra-cotta vessel in the strong Dallas afternoon sun. He is a man of integrity who would lay down his life for his wife and daughter. I like this pose, which captures his qualities of sincerity and quiet dignity. | 11x15" |

Blue Door | Nature is reclaiming the doorway of an old cabin just north of Chillicothe, Ohio. I have been watching this old structure fall into ruin a year at a time since I was ten years old. | 15x22" |
Collection of Courtenay Clevenger |
Ohio Twilight | Under a lowering sky full of snowflakes, two abandoned barns fall slowly into ruin just east of Jamestown, Ohio. | 15x22" |
Collection of Taylor and Laura Ferranti |
Mt. Pleasant Bridge | On a recent concert tour, a friend took me to this newly restored covered bridge on Mt. Pleasant Road in Lancaster County, PA. During the 3 hours I spent painting there, I was visited by an Amish woman who lived near the bridge, an "English" man and his young son who lived up the hill, another father-son duo on motorcycles, and a trout fisherman. That's the part about location painting that I really enjoy: meeting the people who stop to gawk...and stay to talk. | 15x22" |
Collection of Mike and Pam Klontz |
Wind Power | One of my new "Structure" series, this old windmill stands just east of Cedarville, Ohio. I was intrigued by the angular form of the windmill juxtaposed against the soft cloud-forms, and so continued the "juxtaposition" theme with complementary colors and a Chi-shaped composition. | 15x22" |
Collection of Joe Cunningham |
Bookworm | This is my first and only self-portrait. I am sitting in the light, which is the hero of all my paintings and my strongest metaphor for Truth. May I always be found there! I believe that I'm finally honest enough to paint exactly what I see, and enough in command of the medium to make it do what I want it to. My wife wanted to keep the painting, so I guess I succeeded. | 15x22" |
